Thomas Pierre is a National Board Certified Music Teacher. He has spent the last thirty-one years nurturing a spiritual commitment to gospel music. A native of the Bronx, New York, he was formally introduced to music at age twelve, and subsequently attended the famous Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and the Performing Arts (the school featured in the motion picture “FAME”). Mr. Pierre is committed to the study of music and introducing people of all ages to all genres of music. He has a particular passion for helping untrained singers to become greater singers and musicians.
Mr. Pierre received both his Bachelor’s and Master of Arts degrees from Howard University, and has taught vocal, general and choral music in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area at all grade levels. He received the Kennedy Center Changing Education Through the Arts Certificate of Study and is the recipient of the 2011 Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in Teaching in the District of Columbia. He has also completed coursework in Orff-Schulwerk pedagogy.
In addition to his academic endeavors, Mr. Pierre is deeply committed to his music ministry. He founded The Howard University Community Choir and served as its director for fourteen years, and is also the founder and current director of The National Capital Area Choir. Choirs under his directorship have performed on programs with many famous gospel artists, including Shirley Caesar, Beverly Crawford, Daryl Coley, LaShun Pace, Karen Clark Sheard, Myrna Summers, and Ron Winans. His choirs have also performed for Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu, Bishop T.D. Jakes, and Eleanor Holmes-Norton, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Rosa Parks, Dr. Dorothy Height, Marion Barry, and a host of other community activists. Mr. Pierre is a devoted member of The Outpouring Worship and Life Center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
Mr. Pierre provides educational and professional development for educational institutions, clergy, choir directors, ministers of music, praise and worship leaders, and ensembles throughout the country and around the world.
